FLSA Status:  Exempt
Location: Lansing Office, Lansing, MI (possibility remote 2 days/week)
Starting Pay: $65,000 per year (negotiable based on education & experience)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Michigan Virtual is recruiting for a Course Development Manager to manage the development process for courses focused on Professional Learning.  The audience for these courses are K-12 education professionals and the courses are delivered in either a fully online or blended format through the Michigan Virtual Professional Learning Portal (PLP). Courses are typically developed by teams consisting of a course development manager, an instructional designer, and a content expert. Development work is completed in a framework of continuously improving the Michigan Virtual course development process and course quality based upon experience and new research.  Courses incorporate established instructional design practices, adult learning theory, quality course standards (e.g. Quality Matters), and meet web accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0).
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILTIES:

  1. Establish team member roles and timelines for course development projects.
  2. Prepare and manage project budgets.
  3. Ensure projects are delivered on time.
  4. Balance workloads for all team members across various development projects.
  5. Build relationships and maintain communication between relevant internal teams at Michigan Virtual.
  6. Build relationships and maintain communication with external customers and stakeholders.
  7. Maintain and implement consistent development processes and procedures that can be used across a variety of development projects.
  8. Maintain and implement established processes and procedures for course deployment and maintenance.
  9. Maintain accurate progress monitoring and project reports through the Michigan Virtual established task and resource management system.
  10. Draft and manage contract agreements for contracted members of development teams.
  11. Establish and maintain records for relevant license agreements or permissions for any third party content use in courses.  
  12. Prepare project proposals and reports required by state and federal grant or other funding sources.
  13. Use customer data to continually assess and refine course development processes and practices.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

 
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSURES (minimum requirements):

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, organizational and workplace learning or a related field.

 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):

  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience with managing complex projects.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience with the designing, delivering or planning of professional learning.

 
DESIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing professional development to K-12 professionals.
  • Experience teaching in an online or blended environment.
  • Experience managing subcontractors.

 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (minimum requirements):

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects to meet objectives, timelines, and budget requirements.
  • Ability to direct and facilitate teamwork to achieve identified goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology tools to facilitate collaboration.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including personal, written, and electronic communication.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and/or their Google equivalents.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team that includes both onsite and remote workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of stakeholders, students, teachers, and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

 
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Experience with and knowledge of Quality Matters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply lean or Agile production methodologies.
  • Experience with Brightspace learning management system.
  • Experience with a task/resource management platform.
  • Experience with content development tools such as Articulate Storyline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.

 
WORK ENVIRONMENT and/or PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

  • The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting.
  • Sit in a normal seated or standing position in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
