JOB TITLE:            Instructor - Culinary Arts/Tourism Hospitality Management

DEPARTMENT:     Career Center

REPORTS TO:       Career Center Administration

Teach culinary arts/hospitality management to high school students.  Provide students with skills and practical hands on experiences in the culinary/hospitality fields to provide marketable job skills.



  • Provides career and technical education (CTE) program instruction, program management and curriculum development.
  • Maintains a current advisory committee involved in business and industry.
  • Is actively involved with Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center school committees.
  • Demonstrates leadership involvement with student clubs.
  • Provides leadership role in the development of professional and post-secondary partnerships.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the student.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the locations provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, correct records, and program documentation as required by law and district policy.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Follow all Board Policies and Guidelines.



Supervises student support specialist’s daily activities, classroom, and students.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with vocational/technical endorsement for Food Services


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management or related field plus 4,000 hours of recent and relevant work experience to qualify for annual authorization.
  • Previous teaching experience; preferred.
  • Previous experience with high school student population; preferred.
  • Ability to utilize various computer programs and software.
  • Experience working with the business community, service agencies, and educational organizations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.



Valid Driver’s License.

Valid Teaching Certificate in Career and Technical Education (CTE). 



Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.



Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.  Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously walking and frequently required to stand; occasionally the employee will sit.   The employee frequently will bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person.  The employee frequently will reach above the head, squat or stoop and reach forward while performing the duties of this job.   The position requires the employee to be able to have continuous hand/grip strength.  Continuously manual and finger dexterity is required to perform the duties of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently push or lift up to 25 lbs.  The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to tell differences among colors and good depth perception.  The employee is required to hear conversation in a noisy place.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other staff.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.  The employee has a greater than average risk of getting a minor injury such as a cut or burn while performing the duties of this job.
