Position Title: Guidance Counselor

The primary function of the school Guidance Counselor is to advocate for students to ensure they have a positive and successful school experience.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree, or its equivalent, representing intensive coursework in the principles and practice of education guidance and counseling.
  • An endorsement as a Guidance Counselor/School Counselor certificate.
  • At least three (3) years of successful school counseling experience.
  • Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a positive example for students.  Better than average recommendations from supervisor or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic achievement, and work performance of the counselor.
  • Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general counseling/psychology periodicals, professional journals, counseling procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Reasoning Ability:   Ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, with staff and with the community.  Ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals established by the Board of Education.

Report to/Evaluated by: The Guidance Counselor is under the immediate supervision of the site Principal and the Assistant Principal; they are under the indirect supervision of the Superintendent.

Supervisory Responsibility:  All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.

Salary Range:  Salary dependent upon education level and experience per Appendix B of the BTEA contract.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinate the orientation of elementary school students to the middle school and work with the high school counselors to orient middle school students to the high school.
  • Work with all students on an individual or small group basis in the solution of personal problems as related to peers, home and family, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Be available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Under the auspices of the principal, select and administer, and/or coordinate the standardized testing efforts of the school.
  • Assist the principal in mainstreaming the permanent cumulative file for each student and assure appropriateness and currency.
  • Assist students, staff, and parents in evaluating student aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with them in developing the students’ educational plans.
  • Work with other staff to integrate career exploration into the regular curriculum.
  • Be a member of the Child Study Team in the development of an IEP for students with Special Education services.
  • Assist the principal with scheduling classes for all students.
  • Maintain communications with administration, faculty, and parents as to better meet the needs of each student.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal.
  • Take in-service training as provided.
  • Must be self-directed and have the ability to follow directives from supervisors.
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Regular in-person attendance and punctuality are expectations of this position.
