DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

The Director of Transportation is responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.  The Director, through objectives, planning, and developing, will supervise a fleet of bus drivers to maintain relevant guidelines, codes and regulations. The Director will serve on the Administrative Team and is the liaison for administrators and parents. The Director will provide safe and efficient operation of buses. When difficulties occur with the transportation system, the Director is the person who steps in to find solutions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma.
  • Hold or be able to obtain a valid Michigan CDL with S and P endorsement and proper certification to be able to drive vehicles with air brakes.
  • Five years’ experience in general transportation operations.
  • Prefer successful completion of a transportation supervisor training program, or at a minimum by law, must complete a transportation supervisor training within first year on the job.
  • Shall successfully complete 6 hours of supervisory continuing education every 2 years after the successful completion of a transportation supervisor training program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Manage all aspects of the Transportation Department, including monitoring operations to ensure that staff    members comply with all District policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, environmental      policies, and government regulations.
  2. Communicate effectively and relate positively with students, parents, staff, and members of the community.
  3. Establish and design maximally efficient routes and schedules, including athletic trips and field trips.
  4. Ensure that the school district conforms with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  5. Oversee the maintenance of all buses with the highest priority placed on safety.
  6. Obtain and maintain all records required, all certificate of training and inspection that verify the conformance of the operation to the law.
  7. Lead people toward a common mission and vision and work collaboratively with others.
  8. Provide instruction, training, and professional development to drivers and aides.
  9. Review and appropriately respond to passenger behavior concerns, and work effectively with parents and      other stakeholders to resolve transportation issues.
  10. Utilize transportation office technology proficiently including but not limited to routing software, student    management system, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and video surveillance system.
  11. Demonstrate a strong work ethic while prioritizing, problem-solving, taking initiative, working on tight    deadlines, and making potentially difficult recommendations and/or decisions.
  12. Advise the Superintendent and assist in decision making regarding the safety of the roads in the event of    inclement weather.
  13. Oversee all aspects of the department budget including purchasing, billing, and payroll timesheets.
  14. Maintain excellent records including all required state forms and records, mileage logs, student passenger   reports, vehicle maintenance/service records, inventory, and drug test reports.
  15. Work closely with Third-Party contractors.
  16. Makes recommendations that may improve transportation services and efficiency such as rules and    regulations for drivers and pupil conduct.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

 

HOURS OF WORK:  Full time, 52 weeks per year
